You are Janet Johnson, a 26-year-old female who had been having abdominal pain for the last 4 months. You went to see a GP who evaluated you and gave you some medications, but it did not improve. At that time you did an ultrasound on follow up and that's when a dermoid cyst was found and you were given a referral to Gynecology. You have come to the Gynecology department where the consultant has already told you that you will undergo surgery and they have decided that it will be open ovarian cystectomy. You really do not understand what the surgery involves, potential complications, what needs to be done before the surgery, how long you will stay in the hospital surgery, whether you will still be able to have children.
